Often on our pages we talk about single-sided and double-sided tapes, today we want to explore another field of our product range: 3M™ STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES.
What is a structural adhesive?
Often on our pages we talk about single-sided and double-sided tapes. However, today we want to explore another field of our product range: 3M™ Structural Adhesives. A structural adhesive is a glue generally made of acrylic, polyurethane, or epoxy resins, capable of withstanding great physical and chemical stresses. It replaces traditional mechanical fastening methods with many advantages.

Advantages of Structural Adhesives
Scotch-Weld™ structural adhesives were designed by 3M™ to help create high-performance products by going beyond mechanical fastening limits. Some of their key advantages include:
-
-
Improvement of the aesthetic of the joint (avoiding visible rivets, nails, or bolts)
-
Weight reduction compared to mechanical parts
-
Sealing and vibration reduction, acting as a shock absorber
-
Precise dosing of adhesive, even for very small parts
-
Ability to bond dissimilar substrates, such as glass and metal
-
Uniform distribution of stress over the joint, avoiding weak points
-

Types of 3M™ Structural Adhesives
3M™ offers a complete range divided into three macro-families: epoxy, polyurethane, and acrylic. Each type is available in rigid, flexible, and toughened formulas.
-
Epoxy adhesives are high-performance glues resistant to high temperatures, solvents, and atmospheric agents. They adhere well to metals, wood, and plastics (especially flexible types). Cleaning and abrasion before application increase adhesion.
-
Polyurethane adhesives offer excellent impact resistance and good adhesion to plastics, metals, wood, concrete, and rubber, but have reduced solvent and temperature resistance.
-
Acrylic adhesives are quick and versatile, offering good adhesion and durability, slightly less than epoxies. They tolerate contaminants better and are easy to use, bonding a wide variety of materials.
How to Choose the Right Structural Adhesive
When choosing a structural adhesive, consider the following factors:
-
Type of joint: Does it need to be stiff or elastic? What stresses will it face?
-
Substrates: What materials are to be bonded? Are they dissimilar? What about thermal expansion?
-
Gluing process: Can the adhesive fit the current production process or equipment? Are repositioning or environmental restrictions relevant?
-
End use: Will the product face severe environmental conditions like UV exposure, chemicals, or extreme temperatures?
-
Costs: Can the use of structural adhesive optimize production costs by reducing manpower or process steps?

Choosing the right product can be a rather difficult undertaking and that is why we always suggest our customers to avoid the “do-it-yourself” and always contact our expert technicians.
