{"id":2354,"date":"2020-12-07T11:46:59","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T10:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bmp-srl.it\/?p=2354"},"modified":"2025-07-04T15:52:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:52:38","slug":"bonding-temperature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bmp-srl.it\/en\/bonding-temperature\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonding failures ch. 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"87\" data-end=\"211\">In the previous episodes, we learned how to identify a surface, how to clean it, and, when necessary, how to apply a primer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"213\" data-end=\"397\">Our substrate is now ready. It\u2019s time to focus on one of the most underestimated factors (perhaps <em data-start=\"311\" data-end=\"316\">the<\/em> most underestimated of all!) that causes many bonding problems: <strong data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"396\">TEMPERATURE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"430\"><\/h3>\n<h2 data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"430\">Chapter 4: TEMPERATURE<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"577\">When talking about temperature, we must distinguish between <strong data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"515\">storage temperature<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"544\">application temperature<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"576\">temperature resistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"842\"><strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"607\">Storage temperature<\/strong> is the condition under which adhesive tapes and glues should be kept when not in use. There isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all solution, which is why <strong data-start=\"749\" data-end=\"774\">technical data sheets<\/strong> always specify the ideal temperature and humidity for each product.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"1318\">Poor storage can permanently compromise a product. For example, a two-component glue cartridge kept for a few days in a warehouse at 38\u00b0C becomes an excellent paperweight. Similarly, a resin-based double-sided tape will tend to soften and melt in summer or crystallize in winter\u2014both situations make it unusable. Finally, heat-activated tapes will cure prematurely in summer if not stored in refrigeration. The result? A beautiful roll of adhesive becomes a concrete pillar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1450\">Always consider the information on the product\u2019s technical data sheet, and don\u2019t hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1963\"><strong data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1484\">Application temperature<\/strong> is the temperature of the environment during bonding. In general, anything between 17\u00b0C and 25\u00b0C with 50% relative humidity is fine.<br data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1620\" \/>If the tape has been stored at 10\u00b0C, it may not be permanently damaged, but it will be <strong data-start=\"1707\" data-end=\"1731\">temporarily unusable<\/strong>. Let it rest at room temperature for a few hours so it returns to full performance. The same goes for heat: if it&#8217;s summer and your warehouse hits 30\u00b0C (or higher), just keep the tape in a cooled room for a while\u2014it\u2019ll bounce back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"2154\">The situation is very different with glues and heat-activated adhesives: <strong data-start=\"2038\" data-end=\"2058\">if stored poorly<\/strong>, as mentioned above, <strong data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2104\">they become unusable<\/strong> because the alteration process is NOT reversible.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2223\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2223\">How can you tell if poor storage has damaged your product?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2364\">Whether the damage is permanent or not, the symptoms of altered adhesives are generally the same. Let\u2019s list a few typical scenarios below.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2615\"><strong data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2382\">PROBLEM<\/strong>: The glue won\u2019t come out of the tube\/nozzle\/extruder.<br data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2439\" \/><strong data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2448\">CAUSE<\/strong>: The tube is either empty or the glue has cured.<br data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2500\" \/><strong data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2512\">SOLUTION<\/strong>: Throw it away. Also discard all other tubes stored in the same conditions or those that have expired.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2925\"><strong data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2633\">PROBLEM<\/strong>: The double-sided tape feels like a plastic film and doesn\u2019t stick when touched.<br data-start=\"2714\" data-end=\"2717\" \/><strong data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2726\">CAUSE<\/strong>: It was stored at too low a temperature.<br data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2770\" \/><strong data-start=\"2770\" data-end=\"2782\">SOLUTION<\/strong>: Try warming it up (at 21\u00b0C\u2014<strong data-start=\"2811\" data-end=\"2830\">NOT in the oven<\/strong>) for a few hours. If it revives, you can use it. If not, it\u2019s permanently damaged. Discard it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"3377\"><strong data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"2943\">PROBLEM<\/strong>: The double-sided tape feels too sticky, like premium acacia honey. The liner is messy and the adhesive mass seems to be dripping.<br data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3077\" \/><strong data-start=\"3077\" data-end=\"3086\">CAUSE<\/strong>: It was stored at too high a temperature.<br data-start=\"3128\" data-end=\"3131\" \/><strong data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3143\">SOLUTION<\/strong>: Cool it down. If you don\u2019t have a fridge, try a room with air conditioning. It might take time, but it should recover. If it doesn\u2019t\u2014or if you can\u2019t cool it\u2014consider switching to a product that can withstand your working conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3384\" data-end=\"3766\"><strong data-start=\"3384\" data-end=\"3395\">PROBLEM<\/strong>: The liner (silicone paper) is wrinkled.<br data-start=\"3436\" data-end=\"3439\" \/><strong data-start=\"3439\" data-end=\"3448\">CAUSE<\/strong>: Too much humidity. Your tape is deteriorating, and the liner wrinkles are a clear sign.<br data-start=\"3537\" data-end=\"3540\" \/><strong data-start=\"3540\" data-end=\"3552\">SOLUTION<\/strong>: If you can&#8217;t reduce humidity in your facility, use a tape with <strong data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3638\">poly-coated liner<\/strong>, a special type of paper that blocks moisture and protects the adhesive.<br data-start=\"3711\" data-end=\"3714\" \/>(Unfortunately, we can\u2019t help with your rheumatism.)<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3773\" data-end=\"3799\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"3773\" data-end=\"3799\">Temperature resistance<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3801\" data-end=\"4225\">This is the product&#8217;s resistance from application to the end of its service life. Generally, tapes have a resistance range between -40\u00b0C and +100\u00b0C (continuous), with even higher peaks possible. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drtapes.com\/gb\/7-double-sided-tape\">Some double-sided tapes can handle up to 200\u00b0C continuously.<\/a><\/strong> The only mistake you must NOT make is confusing <strong data-start=\"4105\" data-end=\"4131\">temperature resistance<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"4137\" data-end=\"4160\">storage temperature<\/strong>\u2014technical sheets always make this distinction clear. No excuses!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4232\" data-end=\"4483\">For <strong data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4245\">glues<\/strong>, special attention is needed: for some, temperature or relative humidity can <strong data-start=\"4323\" data-end=\"4346\">accelerate or delay<\/strong> curing. This affects the open time (the time between glue application and bonding) and the handling time. Always take this into account.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4485\" data-end=\"4624\">In some cases, this can be an advantage: technical data sheets may even recommend using an <strong data-start=\"4576\" data-end=\"4608\">oven as a curing accelerator<\/strong>, when possible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4626\" data-end=\"4839\"><strong data-start=\"4626\" data-end=\"4669\">Watch out for moisture-curing adhesives<\/strong>: if humidity is high, the glue cures instantly.<br data-start=\"4717\" data-end=\"4720\" \/>Cyanoacrylate is a prime example\u2014it loves sticking to moist fingers instead of the parts you&#8217;re actually trying to fix.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4846\" data-end=\"4932\">As always, if anything in the technical sheet is unclear, ask your trusted technician.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4934\" data-end=\"5019\">Stay tuned for the <a href=\"https:\/\/bmp-srl.it\/en\/bonding-failures-ch-5\/\">next episode<\/a> of <strong data-start=\"4969\" data-end=\"4991\">\u201cBonding Failures\u201d<\/strong>, dedicated to <strong data-start=\"5006\" data-end=\"5018\">pressure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>BMP Team<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the previous episodes, we learned how to identify a surface, how to clean it, and, when necessary, how to apply a primer.
