{"id":2180,"date":"2020-11-13T11:46:59","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T10:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bmp-srl.it\/?p=2180"},"modified":"2025-07-04T15:59:54","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T13:59:54","slug":"common-bonding-failures-causes-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bmp-srl.it\/en\/common-bonding-failures-causes-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonding Failures Chapter 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"123\" data-end=\"259\"><strong data-start=\"123\" data-end=\"259\">Those working in our field have heard at least once: &#8220;The double-sided tape you sold me does not stick.&#8221; Well\u2026 maybe more than once.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"502\">From our investigation\u2014analyzing complaints and customer reports received over the past year\u2014we discovered that more than 95% of bonding failures, cases where the adhesive didn\u2019t work, were not caused by the product itself but by its misuse.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"721\">So, we had the idea of creating a short storytelling series where we share all the horr\u2026 ehm&#8230; errors&#8230; made from time to time by end users. Of course, each mistake will be followed by our tips on how to avoid them.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"756\"><\/h3>\n<h2 data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"756\">Chapter 1: The Substrate<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"862\">Anyone who wants to buy an adhesive\u2014or sell one\u2014should keep in mind the concept of <strong data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"862\">\u201cSurface Energy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"1031\">Simply put, surface energy is a substrate\u2019s ability to create chemical bonds. Adhesives\u2014whether in tape or liquid form\u2014are chemical substances, so here\u2019s the key idea:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1131\">\n<li data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1086\">\n<p data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1086\"><strong data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1058\">Low-energy surfaces<\/strong> are more difficult to bond.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1131\">\n<p data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1131\"><strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1113\">High-energy surfaces<\/strong> bond more easily.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p too!\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"363\" data-end=\"366\" \/>Whenever someone says this, somewhere in the world a double-sided tape technician dies.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"501\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"501\">Adhesive Properties Beyond Stickiness<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"568\">Besides adhesion, a tape has many important properties such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"569\" data-end=\"645\">\n<li data-start=\"569\" data-end=\"582\">\n<p data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"582\">Thickness<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"609\">\n<p data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"609\">Temperature resistance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"630\">\n<p data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"630\">Aging resistance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"645\">\n<p data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"645\">Elongation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"790\">A tape that works well on a tricky plastic at low temperature could be completely unsuitable for a metal that must withstand high temperatures.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"836\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"836\">Always Specify the Surfaces to Bond<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1103\">If you don\u2019t feel confident choosing an adhesive or asking for advice, <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"960\">always specify which surfaces you need to bond.<\/strong><br data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"963\" \/>Be detailed! There are many substrates (the table doesn\u2019t even cover all of them), and just as many adhesives designed for all combinations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1227\">When a customer answers \u201cehm&#8230; it looks like <em data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1160\">plastic<\/em>\u201d to the question \u201cWhat do you need to bond?\u201d, a technician dies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1344\">If you can\u2019t identify the material, have it evaluated by the adhesive supplier. Send the sample and ask for advice.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1393\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1393\">Beware of Treated or Painted Materials<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1561\">Treated or painted surfaces, especially metals, can be very challenging.<br data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1470\" \/>Metals usually bond well, but once powder coated or painted, adhesion can become difficult.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1639\">Every time you forget to mention a painted metal surface, a technician dies.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1669\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1669\">Transparency Is Key<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1827\">Don\u2019t be mysterious.<br data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1694\" \/>Trust the person assisting you.
