All the questions and the most popolar taboos on the adhesive tape, adhesives and sealants

Liquid adhesives and sealants
The structural adhesives have holding capacities to the static shear higher than 700 kg/cm2; in very few cases there are mechanical fixings able to match these performances. Nuts, bolts, rivets and weldings can be replaced with structural adhesives without any problem.
It is not true. The liquid adhesives can also be flexible and create joints resisting either to unexpected impact shocks (like a hammer blow) and to particularly extreme or broad excursion vibrations. These adhesives absorb the forces keeping the joint endurance due to their capacities to change their shape and afterwards can come back to their original sizes.
It is not true. In this case, you must use specific adhesive products, with a very high viscosity, that do not trickle or drip (thixotropic adhesives).
Adhesives can exert a very high adhesion to form structural bonds (Dynamic shear ≥ to 100 kg/cm²).
It is not true. Cartridge application systems are available in the market. They mix the parts of a two-component product in perfect proportions, without generating wastes of the product itself and enabling the adhesive to achieve its best performances.
It is not true: application systems with nozzles are available in the market. They cancel or minimize the application wastes, enabling to use the product easily, only where it is needed and in the proper quantity.
It is not true: there are either adhesives manufactured without solvents or manufactured through water-dispersion. They don’t have any contraindication and they are compatible with the environment. These are ecological adhesives.
It is not true: there are fast adhesives which allow using bonded objects immediately after the joint.
This is not true. There are adhesives with long open time and working time that allow to operate on joints without any rush before the cross-linking.
Single and double sided adhesive tapes
It’s a very strong one due to three factors: chosen adhesive, surfaces preparation, shape and sizes of the surface of the joint.
This is not correct. Paste sealings are really good products, nevertheless there are also sealing adhesive tapes for airtight sealings which allow the immediate wettability of the bonds.
Die-cut formats are used because they make assemblies significantly easy. With die-cuts, you put the adhesive just where it is needed, without dirty, and it is possible to bond one side without the other: the closed side of the tape is protected by the liner and then it can be used when it’s time to complete the assembly.
VHB is an acronym chosen by 3M to identify its high performance double sided tapes range.
Literally, it means “Very High Bond”.
This is not true: the right adhesive tape - properly applied in the context for which it was planned - lasts for many years.
Not at all! First, to obtain a good aesthetic outcome the application of adhesive tapes must be done with care. Moreover, there are adhesive tapes which aims to beautify, decorate, protect and make surfaces more comfortable to the touch.
No, it doesn’t. There are reinforced adhesive tapes able to resist to very high traction loads.
No, they don’t. Removable adhesive tapes can be detached from the substrates even after a long time from their application.
Of course! The thickness of the adhesive and the conformability of the carrier ensure to the adhesive tapes to work on irregular or rough substrates with excellent results.
Because it allows to move the jointed products immediately. Because it’s possible to apply an adhesive tape on a component and to join it with another one later.
There are specific adhesives for low temperatures. Most of them resist to low or very low service temperatures, some of them allow low application temperatures.
Yes, there are. These are specific adhesives with a great resistance to external agents in various conditions of usage.
Yes. There are adhesive tapes made of materials which resist up to 350°C or more. They are calandered with a silicone adhesive which can guarantee a good adhesion also at 200°C in continuous.
Yes: the nature of the adhesive and of the carrier establishes if a tape is able to keep intact its proper bonding features whereas plunged in water.
We can perform some ageing tests using a climatic chamber that can simulate the exposition to environmental agents – at forced conditions - for long periods of time.
Of course! Indeed, this is one of the strong points of adhesive tapes, the existance of products with a different adhesive on the two sides of the carrier.
There are wholly transparent products with which it is possible to make invisible bondings or tapings.
It depends on the type of the adhesive tape, on the application and on the surface on which it is applied: usually a pressure greater than the one that can be applied with a simple tool - like a roller - is not required.
No, it doesn‘t: the mechanical joint works on a small surface (which is the one of the external diameter of the head of the bolt, of the washer, of the rivet or of the screw). The hold is strong in that point but one of the joined parts there might also collapse (for example in case of plastic materials or composite ones). The adhesive tape works on much larger surfaces evenly distributing the force: the result is a better hold of the joints and a lower global fragility of the system. Furthermore, the viscoelastic effect of an acrilic or a foam adhesive tape permits absorbing impacts more efficaciously.
In any area and for a large amount of applications.
